[ARCHIVED] Fallen Officer’s Stolen Hat: Recovered, Restored, and Returned Home in time for Christmas!

INFORMATIONAL RELEASE

Fallen Officer’s Stolen Hat: Recovered, Restored, and Returned Home in time for Christmas!

12-20-17

We are pleased to announce that Marshall Leonard Scherger’s stolen uniform hat has been returned to display at his namesake Scherger Hall in the lobby of the Hartford Police Department.  The department hosted a small unveiling ceremony on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at 9:00am.

Several of Marshal Scherger’s surviving local relatives were in attendance, along with the Hartford city employees that assisted in the recovery of the hat, members of the Hartford Police Department that handled the investigation, and the area business experts that literally came to the rescue to save and restore the damaged hat after its recovery.  We can say that they did a remarkable job!

Due to the logistical realities of the available space, it was impractical to invite the general public to view the hat at the unveiling ceremony.  However, we would like to invite everyone to stop by the department lobby when they have a chance to see the amazing job that was done to restore this piece of Hartford history!

All of us here at HPD are very happy that this piece of our department’s and our community’s history was back where it belongs in time for Christmas!
